Great Weekend for MDA Players in Birmingham

It was a great weekend for the MDA Team at the final UK Open qualifiers at the weekend, with Stuart Kellett beating current world Champ Adrian Lewis and the very experienced Ted Hankey.  All three players will be taking part in the TV finals in Bolton at the start of June, which are televised on Sky Sports. Another huge turnout of players (nearly 200) at the NIA means more tough qualifying rounds for all the players…

Stuart’s Saturday Results

Prelim:  Stuart Kellett 6-4 Mick McGowan
Round 1:  Stuart Kellett 6-4 Michael van Gerwen
Round 2:  Stuart Kellett 6-4 Dyson Parody
Round 3:  Andy Hamiton 6-5 Stuart Kellett

Stuart’s Sunday Results

Prelim:  Stuart Kellett 6-4 Ian White
Round 1:  Stuart Kellett 6-4 Ted Hankey
Round 2:  Stuart Kellett 6-5 Adrian Lewis
Round 3:  Andy Smith 6-0 Stuart Kellett

Dean Winstanley headed to Birmingham for the final two Speedy Services UK Open qualifiers knowing that he had already done well enough to already be able to rest and enjoy Thursday, as he has qualified high enough to start his conquest on the Friday in Bolton.

Dean’s Saturday Results

Round 1: Dean Winstanley 6-4 Steve Maish
Round 2: Dean Winstanley 6-4 Darren Latham
Round 3: Dean Winstanley 6-2 Brendan Dolan
Round 4: Kevin Painter 6-5 Dean Winstanley

Dean was so close to making the 1/4 final, being ahead against Premier League player Kevin Painter, but was narrowly beated 6-5.  Still a good solid day, £600 added to the rankings, with another day to come!

Dean’s Sunday Results

Round 1:  Dean Winstanley 6-4 Keith Stephen
Round 2:  Dean Winstanley 6-3 Andrew Palmer
Round 3:  Peter Wright 6-4 Dean Winstanley

Another £400 won, making it a round £1,000 from the two days.  I’m sure Dean will be disappointed that it wasn’t more, as he had darts to beat Painter on Saturday – but the positive if Dean is not only qualified well for Bolton, he’s also making a big impression in the PDC with consistent runs on the floor.

Justin Pipe and Wes Newton final NIA

Justin Pipe and Wes Newton final NIA

Justin Pipe went out in the first round on Saturday, in a game which was a repeat of the previous weeks’ Final – losing out this time 6-5 to James Wade.  He went on to prove that The Force is in great form on Sunday, with a run to another tour final;

Prelim:  Justin Pipe 6-3 Chris Mason
Round 1: Justin Pipe 6-2 John Henderson
Round 2:  Justin Pipe 6-4 Scott Rand
Round 3:  Justin Pipe 6-3 Jon Bott
Round 4:  Justin Pipe 6-4 Colin Osborne
1/4 Finals: Justin Pipe 6-3 James Hubbard
Semi final:  Justin Pipe 6-0 Joe Cullen
Final:  Wes Newton 6-2 Justin Pipe

Wes played a blinder in the final, not giving Justin many chances.  £3,000 from the weekend, which should keep Justin right at the top of the PC OOM, and a move up 2 places to 13th in the World

Video from the Austria Euro Tour Event – Including JP’s Final

We’ve been sent a a great video from the Austrian Open by the great photographer and darts fan Peter Holczer, which shows the very first European Tour event which was won by Justin of course in a final vs James Wade.

The video shows the large noisy crowd, player walk-ons, and ends with the Justin vs James Wade final and celebrations.  Justin will take heart from the fact it was closer to a TV event than an floor tournament, which is great experience for him.

The Worlds greatest player of all time rounded off one of the best exhibitions of 2012 when Phil Taylor beat MDA’s Justin Pipe in a close and good natured final.

Taylor, Pipe and Matt Ward

Taylor, Pipe and Matt Ward on stage after the final

The night was a massive success, with the 800+ darts fans enjoying nearly five hours of entertainment put on by Matt Ward and his team.  The atmosphere was as close to you could get to a big PDC tournament, with huge screens showing the action close up from the many cameras, and the big stage being lit up with a professional lighting rig.  See the gallery of the night here!

Wayne Mardle put on a show all on his own, keeping the crowd laughing in between throwing some quality darts, including a d10 d10 out shot when he left himself 40.

At times Phil Taylor was averaging 120 in his games, as he beat Eric Bristow in a small piece of history all in itself, then taking out Simon Whitlock, and finally winning the event with a win vs. a well supported Justin ‘the force’ Pipe.

Round 3:  Steve Farmer 6-5 Dean Winstanley

In round 3 Dean played and just lost 6-5 to Steve Farmer, who hit a 9 darter earlier in the day, so was obviously playing some great darts.   A good start to the weekend, with £400 added to the rankings.

Semi final:  Dean Winstanley 1-6 Phil Taylor

What a fantastic day – with a run all the way to the semi-finals, only to be beaten by a magnificent Phil Taylor, who was looking to do a double over the weekend!  Taylor left 81 after 9 darts four times in their game, but Dean did have darts at doubles to take several of the legs he lost, so it could have gone another way.   Still – the £2,000 for a semi-final place will help the move up the world rankings!   The money earned sees Dean already 12th in the Player Champs order of merit, showing how well he’s started in the PDC!

Armageddon Draw Made; Taylor vs Bristow Head 2 Head!

Darts legends Phil ‘The Power’ Taylor and Eric Bristow will go head-to-head in Leicestershire.

Promoter Matt Ward last night performed the draw for his ‘Armageddon’ event at Hermitage Leisure Centre in Whitwick on Friday, April 6 and Taylor and Bristow will clash in the quarter finals of the County’s biggest-ever darts tournament.

Between them, they have won an astonishing 20 world titles and Ward said: “Neither of them ever plays to lose.”

Bristow, known as ‘The Crafty Cockney,’ was the sport’s biggest name in the 1980s when he lifted the world championship trophy five times.  He went on to sponsor Taylor after spotting his potential and the sorcerer and apprentice came face-to-face in the BDO world championship final in 1991.

Taylor’s thumping 6-1 win marked the end of Bristow’s dominance – he never reached another world championship final – and ‘The Power’ has gone on to win the sport’s biggest prize 15 times in a record-breaking career.

UPDATE:  Just 21 tickets remain for the Armageddon event – so it’s heading towards a total sell out!  What an atmosphere that will mean – get your ticket now if you wish to join us!

Taylor, a world champion in three different decades, last week threw his ninth televised nine-dart leg in his McCoy’s Premier League victory over Kevin Painter in Aberdeen.
Tickets for ‘Armageddon’ are still available, but are now  limited in number.

Our Darts Stable Grows; MDA Sign Stuart Kellett

MDA Promotions and their darts management partners Mitchell Promotions are pleased to be able to announce that their darts management has extended to a 3rd player, with their second signing in 2012.  Joining world number 21 Justin Pipe (website), and ex BDO no. 1 Dean Winstanley (website), is former BDO Masters finalist Stuart Kellett, who won his PDC tour card at the start of 2012.

Kellet Signs with management team

Stuart Kellett signing on the dotted line with representatives of his new management team

After a short but successful period in the BDO, I felt the time was right to have a crack at the PDC. The Q school was tough, so I was very happy to achieve my pro tour card on the 2nd day where I played some great darts.

I’ve beaten the best in the BDO but I know there is still a lot of improvement still to come from me and can’t wait to start proving that in the PDC from now on. It’s something I’ve always wanted to do and it’s my ambition to make a living out of the game.

Now, thanks to MDA Promotions and Mitchell Promotions giving me the opportunity to compete in all the competitions, I now have a great opportunity to move up the rankings as quick as possible, and achieving my main goal for year 1 – The World Championships at the Ally Pally!!!- Stuart Kellett

Matt Ward finalised the contracts with Stuart today, and is now confident his has a stable of players who will compete with the best of them in the coming years.

“Stuart is a proven BDO performer and players with that pedigree and experience tend to do well in the PDC.  It’s great to put all our backing behind Stuart, and we know that with our team’s support, he can concentrate on playing the best darts he can on the professional tour.  We can now boast 3 great players under our management team. This will however be our last player of 2012 as myself and Clifton need a social life!” – Matt Ward, on building his dream team.

All three players next head to Reading, for a PDC Player championships ProTour event, and we will hope to bring you positive results from that weekend.
