UK Open – Team MDA In Bolton
Team MDA headed to the Reebok in Bolton for the Speedy Services UK Open, also known as the “FA Cup of Darts”. Televised by Sky Sports, it really is a unique event.
The ‘FA Cup of Darts’ saw Justin start on the Friday in the 3rd round, after qualifying with the top 32. While that meant he managed to dodge the very dangerous early ‘first to 4? rounds, it still turned out it was a dangerous game, as he was playing qualifier Scott Robertson.
Round 3: Justin Pipe 9-2 Scott Robertson
The Force managed to banish his memories of last year’s 3rd round at the Reebok (when he lost to Rileys qualifier John Bowles), and put in a strong performance, winning 9-2.
Round 4: Justin Pipe 5-9 Simon Whitlock
Justin never quite found 5th gear in this match, and while he had a couple of breaks, Simon’s heavier scoring made it very hard work for Justin. Obviously disappointed, I’m sure the Force will be looking to punish his next opponent!
Just as Justin started on Friday in round 3, Dean also could relax on Thursday, and then start his UK Open on Friday.
Round 3: Dean Winstanley 9-5 Jason Crawley
Dean played well, probably missing more doubles than he’d like, but still a fairly comfortable win, which see’s him go through to Saturday’s 4th round.
The open draw was made Thursday night after play, and Dean was drawn to play world number 10 Terry Jenkins.
Round 4: Terry Jenkins 9-3 Dean Winstanley
Stuart had to start on the Thursday evening, in the very short format ‘first to 4 legs’.
Round 2: Stuart Kellett 4 Liam Kelly 1
Round 3: Stuart Kellett 6 Mark Hylton 9
Mark Hylton started very strong in this game, hardly missing a double as he rushed into a big early lead. Stuart showed true class in coming back to 6-6 with his manager Matt cheering him on, but unfortunately his run was to end, as Mark edged him out of it.
